A Pervasive Problem
According to a recent report by ACHA/NCHA, 86% of college students reported feeling overwhelmed in 2014. As we know, feelings of overwhelm can cascade into other mental health concerns, acting out behaviors, as well as substance use disorders. By the time most students reach the university level, they have received little to no social-emotional education during their lives. Consequences of this include poor class attendance, poor academic performance, disruptions to the campus community, and overwhelmed campus mental health centers, to name just a few.
Open Path offers a wide variety of online wellness courses designed to complement the work of your counselors and administrators. Our courses offer students the tools necessary to live more balanced lives and attain academic and personal success. Using evidence based approaches and tested outcome measures, our coursework integrates educational and mindfulness-based principles to build psychological resilience.

Because of Open Path’s Anger Management course I am handling myself better in stressful situations. My friends and family have seen a positive shift, and my life has actually become easier. – Mark L. (Amherst, MA) This course opened my eyes to many things I wasn’t seeing in the relationship I have with substances. It’s changed my decision-making process. I’m experiencing less stress in my life now, and I’m making better choices as a result. – Lucas D. (Ann Arbor, MI)
Open Path’s course on Anxiety and Stress Reduction was a turning point in my life. It helped me become of aware of patterns of dealing with issues that were making things harder in my life, not easier. It taught me coping skills that are much more helpful and my life has been shifting in more positive directions since the day I began taking the course – Amanda R. (Berkeley, CA)

Open Path’s Three Pillars
Three pillars define Open Path’s Student Wellness Solutions’ philosophy and guide our course design:
A Strong Emphasis on Science
Advances in brain-imaging technology have ushered in a new cultural awareness of how our brains affect our lives and relationships. We believe, in accordance with evidence-based research, that a basic understanding of the neurological underpinnings of our emotional landscape help students build self-resilience. All of our courses begin with a scientific exploration of the subject we are addressing, and we translate that knowledge base into strategies for modifying problematic behaviors. We see our newfound knowledge of how our brains and nervous systems function as an extremely optimistic development in helping students shape healthy patterns and behaviors, and we communicate this optimism throughout our coursework.
Allegiance to Mindfulness Awareness Practice
Open Path operates from a belief that paying attention to our minds, our bodies, and our experiences is one of the first foundations to creating resiliency from within. A deeper, clearer, conscious understanding of our thought patterns and behaviors allow us to develop healthier ways of being in the world. We create courses that consistently ask students to slow down, pay attention, and become curious about their experience and how it affects their lives. What is it to live in the present and what is the point? In a non-dogmatic, invitational way, we ask students to actively explore these questions.
We ask our students to own the material in our courses by taking written and physical exercises designed to provoke awareness of unhealthy patterns and offer ways to reset, reshape, and revitalize. Through journaling exercises, evidence-based, brain-based learning techniques, and instructional online videos, students are introduced to a world that may have remained in sight, but just out of reach until now. We are acutely aware that resilience-based learning improves academic performance and Open Path makes it our primary goal to help students achieve a strong level of emotional well-being.
